The 18 suspected prostitutes and 11 people alleged to have profited from them were arrested through a "sting" operation, though Fitzpatrick would not describe exactly how it worked because law enforcement agencies intend to repeat the same operation.
He did mention a "secure location" that was under surveillance as being part of the operation. The suspected prostitutes range in age from 21 to Fitzpatrick said it's common for people to become prostitutes after getting addicted to drugs and becoming involved with "unsavory individuals".
As it was a sting operation, there were no "johns" arrested. Fitzpatrick said the stings were held to coincide with the State Fair, which draws thousands of visitors from around the area.
District Attorney William Fitzpatrick was ed by a of local and federal law enforcement agencies to announce the sting arrests of nearly 30 people accused of profiting from or engaging in prostitution. Fitzpatrick said the people accused of prostitution could be prosecuted through a diversionary court in hopes of preventing jail time and connecting them with services.
One man, Jason Pride, 39, is facing charges including sex trafficking, a class B felony, in addition to promoting prostitution and assault for forcing two women into sex to pay their debt for drugs, Fitzpatrick said, and allegedly burning one of them with a cigarette. In addition to Pride, nine people were arrested for allegedly promoting prostitution, a misdemeanor, for profiting or advancing from prostitution.
Also, Matthew Rathburn, 38, of New Hampshire was arrested in October for trying to meet up for sex with what he thought was a year-old girl.
Instead, he ran into law enforcement and "got the Local and federal law enforcement agencies were involved in the stings. Federal prosecutors also announced the criminal charges against Larry J. Webber, 53, who tried to meet what he thought was a year-old girl for sex, according to court documents, after being contacted through the Craigslist "Casual Encounters" forum.
